Girls’ Generation Appears on ‘Nico Nico Douga’ in Japan

On October 5th, Girls’ Generation appeared on “Nico Nico Douga”, a Japan-based streaming website that is similar to YouTube. During the show, the members talked with three hosts about a dance cover contest and gave advice on performing the choreography of four of Girls’ Generation’s Japanese title tracks.

Girls’ Generation’s appearance began with an introduction of a dance cover contest that will take place through the “Nico Nico Douga” website. Fans participating in the contest will perform a dance cover of either “Genie”, “Gee”, “MR. TAXI”, or “Oh!”. Videos of the cover performances will be uploaded to the “Nico Nico Douga” website, where there are already hundreds of Girls’ Generation dance cover videos. Winners of the contest will have the opportunity to perform in front of Girls’ Generation at a fan event in Japan in November. Taeyeon said, “I’m looking forward to seeing the covers live. I’m interested in how long they practiced, and I would like to meet them soon.”

In the first half of the show, the three MCs played several examples of dance covers as the members of Girls’ Generation commented on the performances. During one of the dance covers, Yuri said that she liked the performer’s outfit and that the performer was even better than the members of Girls’ Generation when they first tried to dance to “Genie”. The members also tried to guess who the dancer was copying, saying that it was either Sunny or Sooyoung.

Afterwards, Girls’ Generation stood up to imitate a dance performance being played on a large screen in the background. This dance was originally performed by Hatsune Miku, a virtual singer with a female persona. The MCs then played “Genie”, “Gee”, “MR. TAXI”, and “Oh!”, and asked for tips on how to perform the dances.

The show ended with a request for a “saranghaeyo” (editor’s note: “I love you” in Korean) pose from all of the members, who made heart signs with their hands for the camera, and a closing comment from Sooyoung, who said, “I’m very happy that so many people skillfully cover our dances. It’s to the point where we want them to dance in place of us when we catch a cold or are not feeling well. We are moved from such perfect dances. Please support us in the future, and please submit many entries.”

Ace Bed Releases New CFs Featuring Girls’ Generation

Ace Bed recently revealed two new advertisements featuring Girls’ Generation to accompany the ones released this April. In the first ad, Tiffany and Seohyun, along with popular actor Lee Sun Gyun, cheerfully promote Ace Bed. Afterwards, all of the members gather together to sing Ace Bed’s upbeat jingle. The CF ends with Seohyun telling viewers to “have a good jam (Translator’s note: “jam” means “sleep”).”

In the second commercial, Sooyoung and Yoona sympathize with the difficult choice newlyweds have to make when choosing a bed. Yuri advises, “Ask science!” After Lee Sun Gyun speaks about the product, all nine girls once again chime in with the short but catchy tune. Finally, Yoona gives viewers a cute wink as she wishes for them to “have a good jam.”

Girls’ Generation 6th Japanese Single 'Flower Power' and 2nd Japan Album Information

Girls’ Generation will release their sixth Japanese single, titled “FLOWER POWER”, on November 14th. Following the successful releases of “PAPARAZZI” and the Japanese version of “Oh!” in Japan this past year, fans can now look forward to another single in just over a month. Along with the news of its release, “FLOWER POWER” was also revealed to have lyrics that will demonstrate the “sexy” side of Girls’ Generation, contrary to the single’s title.  The lyrics describe the strategic moves between a man and a woman on the dance floor and are sung with the sound and light of a glitzy atmosphere. The song will be a dance number with a flowing baseline in 4/4 time with a sexy chorus line. The promotional picture for “FLOWER POWER”, shown above, has the girls trying to escape searchlights.

Along with the news of the release of “FLOWER POWER” on November 14th, it was revealed that Girls’ Generation’s second Japanese album will be available two weeks later on November 28th.  The title of this second Japanese album is yet to be announced. The second Japanese album will come in three editions: a deluxe first press edition, a first press limited edition, and a regular CD edition.

In addition to “FLOWER POWER”, Girls’ Generation’s sixth single will also feature a track titled “Beep Beep”, as well as a “digest medley” of songs from Girls’ Generation’s second Japanese album. The second Japanese album will not contain “Beep Beep”, and the track will only be available on the “FLOWER POWER” single.

On YTN’s ‘News 12 – Issue and People’ aired on October 4th, The One, who was once a vocal trainer, talked about one of his students, Taeyeon.

Recently, interviewer Jung Seokhee had to opportunity to ask questions to Hyoyeon and the rest of G5, made up of Jewelry’s Yewon, SISTAR’s Bora, Kara’s Jiyoung, and Miss A’s Suzy, along with other members of the cast of “Invincible Youth 2″. During the interview, Hyoyeon and the other cast members spoke about her confidence, her specialty among the G5, and her cooking skills.

Lee Youngja, an actress, comedian, and one on the MCs of the show, discussed Hyoyeon’s role as the mood-maker, saying, “Hyoyeon makes the atmosphere [fun], but she is the type to say what she has to without being afraid of anyone. It was nice, because she has confidence.”

Jung Seokhee then asked the G5 members about the recent change in the show’s hosts, saying, “‘Invincible Youth 2′ is like a job for G5. As it is a scary senior (translator’s note: he is referring to Lee Youngja) coming in place of a pretty boy (Ji Hyunwoo), I assume you might have felt uneasy on the first day (laugh).”

Hyoyeon answered, “I, too, was worried, but that was very momentary. Right now, I always like it (translator’s note: Hyoyeon is saying she is happy with Lee Youngja joining the show). I like everything.”

Jung Seokhee also asked Hyoyeon what she was the best at doing on “Invincible Youth 2″. With an awkward expression, Hyoyeon replied, “I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing well in.”

Kim Shinyoung came to Hyoyeon’s rescue, saying, “Hyoyeon’s specialty is her instant wit. For instance, even when Youngja mom makes a cheesy joke every now and then, we all laugh it over thanks to Hyoyeon’s wit.”

Hyoyeon then talked about her image on the show. Jung Seokhee asked, “Hyoyeon, are you normally not good at housework? That’s not it, right? You always seem to be getting in trouble with mom (translator’s note: Lee Youngja) while being compared to Bora.”

She answered, “It looks like that, right? I’m actually the best cook amongst the members, but out of nowhere, Youngja mom started pushing me towards [the image of] not being good at [house]work, heuk heuk (translator’s note: crying sounds). However, there isn’t really much reason to come out showing that you do well here, because you’ll just have to work more then (laugh).”

Finally, Jung Seokhee brought up “Dancing with the Stars II”, asking, “When you went between this [show] and MBC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars II’ before, I assume you would have been very tired. Did the ‘Invincible Youth 2′ members give you words of encouragement?”

Hyoyeon revealed, “I’m… not sure. They did send me text messages though. However, even that was after they watched reruns (laughs).”

Boom, another MC on the show, added, “Like when Hyoyeon is doing well, if Youngja noona does something well or if someone has a kiss scene with a guy, we immediately text each other. We encourage, get jealous of, and tease each other. Then there is a fuss during the next meeting.”

Girls’ Generation Featured in ‘The New Yorker’ Magazine

As Girls’ Generation continues to make inroads into America and the world, more and more media organizations are taking notice. The latest in a string of mentions of the girls by Western media comes from none other than the famous New Yorker magazine, an American magazine that covers politics, social issues, art, humor, and culture.

In his article for the October 8th, 2012 issue of “The New Yorker”, “Factory Girls: Cultural technology and the making of K-pop”, writer John Seabrook profiled Girls’ Generation and K-Pop in general. To gain a sense of what the K-Pop culture is like, he attended “SMTOWN LIVE WORLD TOUR III” in Anaheim, California in May, where he interviewed MoonSoshi9, a Soshified writer. Seabrook also features conversations with various luminaries including Tiffany and Jessica, the Wonder Girls, and Neil Jacobson, an executive at Interscope Records, Girls’ Generation’s label in the United States, as well as MoonSoshi9‘s May 2012 editorial about the girls. In addition, Seabrook gives an overview of the history of K-Pop and Hallyu, the process of training future stars at SM Entertainment, and opinions and items to consider regarding the current status and future of K-Pop in the United States and in the West.
