S.M. Entertainment's official press release regarding the group stated that the subunit's intention was to "grab the attention of fans with all aspects of music, performance, and fashion styles." Also hinting at the possibility of future subunits containing other members, elaborating, "by changing the members of the unit according to the music and concept of each new subunit album."
S.M. Entertainment revealed the thought process behind naming the unit "Girls’ Generation–TTS"”. The name "TaeTiSeo" is made up of the first syllables of Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. This name has the letters "T" and "S", which have distinct sounds, giving a strong vibe of the team and also lets the fans recognize the members instantly.
A promotional image showing the three singers of Girls' Generation-TTS styled in outlandish clothing and makeup, with brightly colored textures around them, was released along with the unit's announcement in April 2012. Soon afterward, three video teasers of their single "Twinkle", each featuring a different singer, were released over three days.
The single "Twinkle" was released on the iTunes Store worldwide on April 29. The mini-album Twinkle was released on the iTunes Store on April 30 and on CD on May 2. They began promotions on music shows on May 3.
About The Album
Twinkle is the debut EP by South Korean girl group Girls' Generation's sub-unit TaeTiSeo. It was released digitally on April 29, 2012 and physically on May 2, 2012 through SM Entertainment.
The title track, "Twinkle", written and produced by Brandon Fraley, Jamelle Fraley, and Javier Solis, is a dance-pop track with influences of funk, electropop and go-go. Taking inspiration from music during the 1970s and 1980s, specifically, that of Stevie Wonder.
"Twinkle" falls into the funky soul genre with a mid-tempo reminiscent of a 70′s-80′s Stevie Wonder style song. The straightforward daring feel and lyrics show off the three members’ exceptional vocals. "Baby Steps" has a mid-tempo groove with a strong R&B style, also is a korean version of the song with the same name of the american boy-band "Varsity Fanclub". "OMG" is an electronic-retro pop track with a unique sound, and "Love Sick" is about a shy girl who learns about love through her first crush. "Goodbye, Hello" is a track with a shuffle rhythm about not being able to believe that they just went through a break-up the day before.
Twinkle peaked at number four on the US iTunes Album Charts, where it now holds the record for the highest peaking K-pop album on the chart. It reached number one on both the Japanese and Bulgarian iTunes Album Charts, whilst being in the top 10 on various other countries' charts. The album also achieved an all-kill status in South Korea, reaching number one on MelOn, Bugs, Olleh, Soribada, Mnet, Daum and Naver. Twinkle reached #126 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart by selling over 3,000 copies, where it also holds the record for the highest peaking K-pop album on the chart. The album also reached #1 on the Billboard World Albums and #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums.
